Lúrio University has received authorisation from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to site its Faculty of Social and Human Sciences in São Sebastiao fortress on Mozambique Island in Nampula province.
A statement from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Higher and Professional-Technical Education states that the faculty will commence activities there in 2017.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism decision was based on national and Unesco legislation on the management of cultural heritage, with the Island of Mozambique featuring in the World Heritage of Humanity catalogue.
‘The authorisation is of great importance for Lúrio University in that it allows, on the one hand, the expansion of its areas of operation and, on the other, aligns the historical and cultural nature of Sao Sebastiao fortress with our scientific ones,” the note remarks.
Initially, the faculty will teach two courses, namely Tourism and Hospitality and Development and International Relations, in partnership with the New University of Lisbon and the School of Hospitality and Tourism of Estoril, both from Portugal.
The ‘UniLúrio’ was established in 2006 under the government’s plan to expand higher education in Mozambique, and has campuses in Nampula, Niassa and Cabo Delgado.
It currently has five faculties: Health Sciences and Architecture and Physical Planning in Nampula; Engineering and Natural Sciences in Cabo Delgado; and Agricultural Sciences in Unango, Niassa, and offers 14 undergraduate and five postgraduate courses.
