Former Mozambican athlete Lurdes Mutola is to support the country’s talent and sports development programmes in response to a request from the Ministry of Youth and Sport (MJD), with the two sides signing a memorandum of understanding in the coming days to kickstart the initiative, Noticias reports.
Mutola, winner of a gold medal in the 800 metres at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, will work in coordination with the MJD.
The “Golden Girl”, as she is affectionately known, responded positively to the invitation from Minister of Youth and Sports Nyeleti Mondlane, who sees the Olympic champion and three-time world 800 metres champion as a role model who can transcend borders.
At the meeting last week, Lurdes Mutola expressed her willingness to work with the MJD to develop school sport and empower youth.
