Luísa Meque and Gabriel Monteiro have assumed the leadership of new National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) – and its 6.4 billion meticais budget shortfall.
Forecasts indicate that 1.7 million people could be affected by floods and other extreme weather phenomena this rainy season, for which the Executive estimates it needs around 7.2 billion meticais, of which it has only around 800 million available, leaving a 6.4 billion shortfall.
President of the Republic Filipe Nyusi called on the leadership of the newly created institution to implement a strategy to mobilise resources.
Luísa Meque knows the area for which she assumes the portfolio very well, having been the general director of the extinct National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC). She takes on the presidency of the INGD at a time when the country is already dealing with several disasters, including the Covid-19 pandemic.
Gabriel Monteiro was also a staff member at the INGC, and held the position of deputy director-general since January 2020, the time when Meque assumed the position of director-general.
