The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME), Leticia Klemens, made a positive assessment of the implementation of the 2016 Economic and Social Plan in her sector in a report delivered yesterday to the head of state during an Advisory Council meeting chaired by the president during his visit to the ministry.
Klemens quotes statistics demonstrating the progress of PES implementation and the results achieved. “Our plan (PES) was carried out 101 percent. The rate of production growth was 15.3 percent, with metallurgical and thermal coal, heavy sands and natural gas having significant weight in the overall structure of production,” the minister said, highlighting a 33 percent increase in exports.
During her presentation, the minister spoke of immediate and future projects, especially in the area of energy and mining. The expansion of the electricity grid in the case of energy and the shortening of license periods for mining licenses form part of developments in the pipeline.
Drought reduces power generation
In spite of the growth in mining, the production of electricity fell last year as a result of the drought affecting the country.
“Electric power generation declined 2 percent due to the water deficit that caused the level of water storage in the reservoirs to drop, mainly in Cahora Bassa,” she said. In total, according to the minister, there was a decrease of five percent “resulting from the fall of generation”.
MIREME numbers however indicate that the 2016 energy sector plan achieved 92 percent success.
