On Wednesday, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi attended Dhlakama’s funeral procession in the city of Beira as part of a ceremony prepared by a commission that included relatives of the historic leader, members of Renamo, the largest opposition party, and the Mozambican government.

Nyusi said that peace process negotiations in Mozambique would continue, despite Dhlakama’s absence.
The President of Mozambique described Dhlakama as a figure who had written “indelible pages” in the history of the Mozambican nation and said that his death should not prove a “setback” in the agreements that were being reached.
After the ceremony Afonso Dhlakama’s remains travelled to his homeland, where a wake involving the local community followed until his burial with official honours, as decreed by the government.
The party leader died at the age of 65 in the Gorongosa mountains from health complications last Thursday.
