Statement by the Spokesperson on the local elections in Mozambique and the official launching of the Disarmament, Demobilisation, and Reintegration process
The organisation of overall orderly local elections on 10 October represents an encouraging sign for Mozambique’s peace consolidation. It is important now that all sides contribute to a peaceful and transparent conclusion of the process. Together with a good preparation for next year’s general elections, this will reinforce the confidence of all Mozambicans aspiring to an inclusive political environment.
At the same time, the start of the Disarmament, Demobilisation, and Reintegration of RENAMO armed elements should open a new era of reconciliation in which differences are settled through political means. The EU is ready to support all steps leading to a comprehensive and durable peace agreement and its successful implementation
