The President of Frelimo, Filipe Nyusi, argues that the ruling party in Mozambique has an obligation to win the municipal elections scheduled for October this year, maintaining control of those municipalities already under its management and rescuing those under the control of the opposition.
Nyusi also wants the ruling party to emerge victorious in the 12 newly created municipalities, so that it can continue to implement the country’s development agenda.
The intention was expressed today in Matola during the opening of a capacity-building seminar for members of the Verification Committee, extended to first provincial secretaries. “Our party faces the challenge of maintaining governance in the 44 municipalities under our management, rescuing the nine under opposition management, and winning in the newly created municipalities,” Nyusi said.
He urged the Verification Committee to conduct with all possible transparency, and always having as a guide the party’s statutes, the process of electing candidates at various levels of the municipal bodies, starting with the heads of lists.
“In addition to the observance of legality, it is essential that analysis of the requirements be guided by transparency and fairness. We don’t want any complaints about the process. But this is only possible when there is good work at the base,” the party president said.
He said he hoped that the party’s internal elections would produce candidates with profiled suited to the demands and challenges of the country and capable of attracting sufficient votes to ensure a significant victory for Frelimo.
Nyusi characterised next October’s local elections, the sixth such round, as a moment of extreme importance in the national political cycle, an affirmation of the country and confirmation of its democracy.
