Mozambique: Three dead in clashes in Montepuez

The National Inspection of Economic Activities (INAE) had by the end of yesterday seized 14,000 tons of South African Enterprise and Rainbow Chicken Limited brand meat products across the country.
The INAE’s Director of Operations for Industry, Commerce, Tourism and Transportation Virgínia Muianga estimated the value of the products withdrawn from both the formal and informal markets at around nine million meticais.
The action follows the ban on the sale and importation of these products in Mozambique following an outbreak of food poisoning in South Africa which has killed 180 people among the 948 cases reported over the last 14 months.
The disease is caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, sometimes found in processed meats such as polony, sausages and other cold meats.
Virginia Muianga said that the INAE’s task was to remove the products from the shelves and isolate them prior to disposal by incineration, so that the products would not be find their way back into the market and cause an outbreak of food poisoning.
“Bringing infected foods into contact with others can cause cross-contamination, so the correct thing to do is to seize these products, burn them and disinfect the place. Even at home, we have to be careful. We can open a pit, burn them with coal, firewood or oil. Cleaning the freezer and disinfecting it can be done with ‘Certeza’ or another detergent,” Muianga explained.
But, up until the end of the yesterday morning, stores continued to sell the products, whose consumption has been dubbed a risk to public health by the INAE since Monday.
