Mozambique: Exam boycott affected about 35,000 students
Forty people were killed by lightning in the last six months in Mozambique, National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC) spokesman Paulo Tomas told Lusa yesterday.
“This is a new and worrying phenomenon,” said Tomas, adding that most of the cases occurred in the provinces heavily affected by the floods between October and March.
The Mozambican government is organizing a study to better understand the rocketing casualty numbers and identify the highest risk areas in a survey coordinated by the National Institute of Meteorology.
Latest INGC rainy season data indicates that more than 32,000 people were affected by floods, mainly in the north, while the south and the centre are struggling with a drought that left about 1.4 million people facing food insecurity.
Mozambique is seasonally affected by floods as a result of being situated downstream of most of Southern Africa’s river systems – in spite of which the south and centre of the country are affected by a prolonged drought.
