The provincial government of Nampula is to build public libraries in all of the province’s 23 districts.
According to the provincial director for culture and tourism, Agostinho Zacarias, the project is needed to rectify the shortage of spaces where students can learn.
Zacarias added, “the libraries will be built in coordination with the education sector and will be managed by the provincial directorate of culture and tourism. They will strengthen the facilities that exist in some schools, which we are aware are not sufficient to satisfy the demand of students in the region”.
According to the provincial directorate of education, Nampula province currently has about three million students taught by thirty thousand teachers.
In addition, the provincial government intends to build 23 cultural centres. These will be spaces to host musical and cultural activities. Zacarias explained that there are currently only three cultural centres in the entire province.
He added, “the cultural centre is the artist’s nursery. It is in this place where he identifies with his art because it is there that he is trained and qualified, and it is where his art is exhibited to the public”.
