At least three people were killed and forty injured in a collision between a Vale Mozambique train and a Nagy Investments bus yesterday afternoon. According to “Notícias”, four of the injured are in a serious condition. Twenty-five were treated on site and the others are still in hospital.
The incident happened at an unmanned level crossing in Mucuapa, about five kilometres from the centre of the city of Cuamba, when the driver of the bus on the Entre-Lagos – Nampula route tried to beat an approaching train across the intersection.
Passengers described the bus driver as irresponsible, saying he had deliberately accelerated with the aim of crossing the line before the train got there. Survivors said they had previously asked for the relief driver to take the wheel because of the man’s driving, but their request was turned down on the grounds that the drivers could only swap round in Malema as scheduled.
The district government of Cuamba mobilised emergency services to the scene immediately on hearing of the accident. The driver, who survived, fled the scene of the accident and his whereabouts are currently unknown.
