At a time when political, military and economic and social stability are seriously threatened in Mozambique, the Christian Council of Mozambique (CCM) joined believers of other faiths in the city of Beira in a prayer for peace, urging those in power in the country to withstand by any and all peaceful means any attempt to take the country and the people to the precipice.
The appeal was launched on Sunday 2 October in a prayer for peace initiative in Beira organized by the CCM and involving various religious congregations including the Islamic Community of Mozambique (CIMO) and the Catholic Church, where the call was for the cessation of the military hostilities destabilising the economy and making normal life increasingly impossible.
The event’s main objective was to bring religious people together at a ceremony in Beira’s Peace Square aimed at creating an environment where everyone will make a redoubled effort to maintain peace.
Speaking exclusively to CRV Magazine, CCM president the Reverend Jacob Jenhuro said that the prayer for peace also took into account the October 4 celebration of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in 1992 in Italy.
“We want to pray for peace because on Tuesday 4 October we will celebrate the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement,” the Reverend Jenhuro said.
Speaking on the same occasion, CIMO president Moulana Abdul Rashid Ismail said the CIMO would shortly send letters simultaneously to the state president and the Renamo leader, urging them to spare no effort to achieve peace even if it meant some compromise or sacrifice for the well-being of all Mozambicans.
”It is not difficult to understand that war is bad and that it is a loss in itself. But if we try to overcome evil with evil, we only multiply evil. Only good can overcome evil. Let us all fight, but a fight without weapons and without loss of life, a fight to bring peace into the hearts of men,” the CIMO president said.
Abdul Rashid Ismail believes that peace is the main precondition for a nation to achieve the progress and growth so longed-for by the people, already affected by the deteriorating economic situation.
As for the Archbishop of Beira, Dom Claudio Dalla Zuanna, he believes that peace should be focused on sustainable development pillars, above all, on quiet and calmness without agitation or disturbance.
Don Claudio drew attention to the need for social inclusion, tolerance and love between people, stressing that the country cannot live at war with itself.
“Mozambicans can no longer be bound in this type of environment. You can never build a society with such disturbances. Mozambique needs inclusion, tolerance and love; if we carry on like this we will never move forward,” he said.
Daviz Simango, MDM president and current mayor of the city and other of the city executive joined believers at the meeting.
Mozambique this year celebrates the 24th anniversary of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in Rome in 1992.
