Portuguese soccer coach José Mourinho is the new ambassador for an emergency operation to support the victims of the Cyclone Idai, the Red Cross of Portugal has announced.
Cyclone Idai and its attendant floods left a trail of destruction and mourning in Sofala, Manica, Tete and Zambézia provinces in the central part of the country. The world has not remained indifferent to this catastrophe, mobilising resources to rescue victims and support them in various ways, and great sportsmen have been no exception.
José Mourinho, coach for European champions FC Porto and Inter Milan of Italy and known for his involvement in major causes, is alert to the Mozambicans’s suffering and has joined the team at ‘Baobab for Mozambique’ [Embondeiro para Moçambique], the operation managed by the Portuguese Red Cross and Médicos do Mundo.
The Portuguese coach has called on his fellow citizens to maintain their support, stressing that there had been a huge catastrophe, and there should be no break or time out in the push to help victims.
“It’s like we’re all a team, striving towards the ultimate goal. We will be a team for Mozambique and Beira, and we will keep moving forward until the end,” the coach says.
There have been more than 600 confirmed deaths since Cyclone Idai hit central Mozambique.
