The head of Mozambique’s Institute’s Department of Deming Operations , Antonio Martins has said although Mozambique was declared “free of landmines” in 2015, some explosive devices continue to surprise people in new farming or housing areas across the country. The official said in the most recent incident, a man was blown to death by an explosive device in the central Mozambican province of Zambezia after confusing it with an old scrap metal and this forced the Mozambican Mine-Clearance Institute to train and distribute demining equipment to the country’s police force.
Martins says the training and distribution of landmine clearance equipment to the Mozambican police are meant to help the law and order men and women respond to eventual problems of explosive devices in communities.
“All areas which were known to have landmines have been cleared. However, we know that some landmines have been found here and there, particularly in new farming areas. These explosive devices have victimized people. That’s why we are training the police and equip them with material to handle the discovered new landmine cases”, he said.
