Twenty-three houses could be demolished in Pemba due to a land dispute which has already reached the courts, where a ruling was drawn up on the basis of an out-of-court settlement that one of the parties involved in the case has since decided to oppose as unfair.
At first, the residents tried to resist events, but ended up yielding to the police force sent there to ensure the execution of a court order, allegedly contrary to the ruling issued by the judge of the case, on April 24, 2017.
Pemba Municipal Council acknowledged its mistake in the double award of use of land title, and said it had tried to remedy the problem, but claimed to be unaware of the reasons the old and apparently closed conflict had resurfaced.
Our reporting team could not access the court order issued that runs counter to the ruling drawn up on the basis of the judicial agreement, which only includes the laying of access roads, not the demolition of some houses on block 24.
