The ban that has prevented civil aviation companies registered and certified in Mozambique from flying to European airspace since 2011 will be lifted . However @Verdade understands that, in addition to the work carried out by the Civil Aviation Institute of Mozambique (IACM), the increasingly close natural gas business, which will demand more and more passenger traffic from various parts of the globe to / from our country, will have weighed on this decision.
The Civil Aviation Committee of the European Union, meeting in late April, unanimously decided to withdraw all airlines registered and certified by the IACM, including the Mozambican Airlines LAM, from Annex A, the list of the airlines banned from flying in European airspace.
A senior Mozambican civil aviation source has confirmed that the ban will be lifted once the so-called “blacklist” is updated in the official publication of the European Commission.
Although this decision by the European Union Civil Aviation Committee takes place within the follow up on audits and inspections which took place during the first months of 2017, the truth is that, since the ban was imposed, a lot of work was carried out by the IACM, particularly in the creation and implementation of the 180 rules and procedures of the Mozambican Civil Aviation Regulations.
Knowing the lack of capacity of Mozambican airlines, particularly the calamitous situation of our flag company, the Mozambique Airlines, it is unlikely that this decision will result in the short-term restoration of the routes between Maputo and the main European capitals, reads the @Verdade report.
However, João de Abreu Martins, Chairman of the Board of Directors (PCA) of the IACM explained in an interview to @Verdade in June last year that “it is not the flight to Europe that is important, what we have to do is to ensure that any citizen of the world, including European, when entering a plane under Mozambican tuition feels safe, this is what is the main point. “
Meanwhile, @Verdade had already anticipated this decision following the air services agreement initialled between the Government of Mozambique and France on 3 May 2017. A senior Mozambican civil aviation source revealed at the time that the agreement, which had been under negotiation since 2014, only took place this year after the French Government was sure that the ban would be lifted.
