Mozambican air carrier LAM may temporarily cancel flights near the Mozambican Channel because of the cyclone due to hit two provinces in the south of the country in the coming hours, a statement sent to Lusa yesterday reads.
“Depending on the intensity of the possible tropical disturbance, some flights may be reprogrammed,” the company statement said, adding that, as a precaution, the same measure would be taken for flights using the Mozambique Channel zone where the cyclone was formed as a route.
Tropical cyclone Dineo, which began as a tropical depression in the Mozambican Channel, reached the Mozambican coast on Wednesday, and authorities have warned people to take precautionary measures.
Speaking to Lusa on Tuesday, spokesman for the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC) Paulo Tomás said that, due to the cyclone, with waves about five metres in height, the government had activated the technical councils In the provinces likely to be affected, along with the National Civil Protection Unit.
“At the moment, we are in a position of just monitoring, since, to a certain extent, these aspects have been foreseen in the Contingency Plan,” the INGC spokesperson said.
