The public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation to clarify the destination of proceeds from the sale of two Mozambique Airlines (LAM) aircraft which do not appear to be reflected in the company’s accounts.
According to the Central Office for Combating Corruption (GCCC), the investigation concerns the purchase, sale and rental of two Bombardier Q 400 aircraft involving LAM and a foreign company, where a cursory analysis led to suspicions of corruption in the assessment of values related to the operation.
To establish the facts, criminal proceedings were initiated on 5 July last, while an audit of the process of buying, selling and renting the two aircraft was requested by the General Inspectorate of Finance. The idea is to determine the destination of the money in consultation with former company managers.
Suspicions of fraudulent activity were raised by GCCC when it started investigating two administratrors for alleged mismanagement practices at the flagship airline after they were reported by company workers.
Following this, prosecutors filed charges against a former LAM manager for abuse of office over the award of 25 contracts to a company belonging to a close family member.
