Mozambique’s state-owned airline, Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM) and private operator Fastjet are going to accept each other’s passengers if there are any difficulties on their domestic flights they said after signing an agreement in Maputo on Wednesday (5 September).
“Irregularities happen due to a number of factors, including bad weather,” and the agreement aims to “minimise the impact” on passengers, the companies said in a joint statement.
The understanding outlines that “conditions are created for each company to accept on its flights the passengers of its counterpart if it is unable to operate within the scheduled time, due to any momentary adversity”.
The agreement applies to destinations which both LAM and Fastjet serve, namely Maputo, Beira, Nampula and Tete, and follows the memorandum of understanding signed between the two companies on 21 March.
“Internally, we are implementing a series of measures that allow us to continuously monitor flights, in order to raise operational reliability levels,” LAM director general João Jorge said.
Jorge took office in July at a company experiencing delays and cancellation due to financial problems.
Sylvain Bosc, Fastjet’s commercial administrator, said that “establishing partnerships where brands can provide mutual benefit to the public is essential”. “This agreement ensures reliable air services to all in Mozambique, based on the collaboration of Fastjet and LAM,” he added.
