The publicly owned Mozambique Airlines (LAM) has entered into a codeshare agreement with Fastjet Mozambique covering several domestic routes.
On Monday the codeshare agreement came into effect on the Maputo to Beira route. This will be followed in March with a codeshare agreement covering the routes from Maputo to Tete and Quelimane.
In March last year, LAM signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Fastjet, which operates flights on some of Mozambique’s main domestic routes. Under the memorandum, the two airlines committed to long-term cooperation which will involve codeshare and route agreements, as well as collaboration in other commercial activities such as cargo, engineering and maintenance.
The collaboration is seen by commentators as a response to the increased competition due to Ethiopian Airlines entering the market in December. Ethiopian Mozambique Airlines now flies scheduled flights between the capital city Maputo and Nampula, Tete, Beira, Quelimane, and Pemba.
