Lack of funds may delay repair and widening of road linking Mozambique to Zimbabwe

The lack of funds to pay for the relocation of families and of some existing infrastructure along the route could jeopardise the completion by 31 March of repair and extension works of National Road Number Six (EN6) in Mozambique, said the director of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources of the province of Sofala.

Manuel Fobra also told Mozambican newspaper Notícias that the main obstacle to the project is the demolition of some houses and shanties at the Inchope intersection in the province of Manica and their rebuilding and relocation of families elsewhere.

The project, carried out by the Anhui Foreign Economic Construction (Group) Co., Ltd., has an estimated cost of US$410 million funded by a loan granted by the China Export-Import Bank, and currently involves more than 1,500 Mozambican workers and is about 85% complete.

The project, which aims to reduce travel time from Beira to Machipanda from six to four hours, includes the construction of 48 kilometres of a road with four lanes, and a second bridge over the Púnguè river.

Cargoes such as liquid fuels, coal, wood and agricultural products are transported along the EN6, with an estimated daily traffic of 3,000 vehicles, 1,500 heavy and the same number of light vehicles.
