The government’s proposed labour law revision in Mozambique bans HIV/Aids testing for jobseekers, Lusa has established.
“Subjecting jobseekers or workers to tests or medical examinations in order to ascertain their HIV/Aids status is forbidden,” the labour law proposal reads.
Several Mozambican entities currently request HIV/Aids testing for jobseekers, but the Health Ministry argues that this is a private matter. According to official figures, 13.2% of the population aged 15-49 in Mozambique is infected with HIV/Aids.
The draft labour law, to replace that which has been in force since 2007 and which is still under consultation, was presented by the Mozambican government to businessmen, trade unionists and other interested parties in Maputo on Wednesday.
The government argues that a revision of the law is necessary to adjust it to the current socio-economic state of the country, and to respond to the demands of the business sector, which has called for greater labour law flexibility.
“In addition, we need to adjust to the dynamics of the International Labour Organisation, which annually adopts or re-adjusts the International Labour Standards,” Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security Vitória Diogo added.
