Mozambique: Governor of Nampula engages in industrial development talks at MozParks
Mozambique’s General Inspectorate of Labour (IGT) has shut down a scheme in Maputo which was forging employment certificates for foreigners seeking employment in Mozambique.
In a press release distributed to the media, the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security explains how, in conjunction with the International Bank of Mozambique, it detected the forgery of deposit slips proving payment of fees for the processing of foreign recruitment processes at 15 companies.
The statement goes on to say that, of 17 recruitment procedures in January this year, 15 of those, totalling over 210,000 meticais in value, involved falsifications of one sort or another. The 15 companies identified had brought workers from Portugal, Pakistan and Nigeria to Maputo.
“The General Inspectorate of Labour, after confirming the fraud, decided to suspend the foreign nationals concerned and penalize the companies under national law”, the statement reads.
The IGT found that most of the companies involved in the scheme are not located at the address declared, and said that work aimed at clarifying the situation is underway as well as the process of notifying the companies of the measures taken.
It adds that the IGT “has already sent to the Attorney General’s Office the paperwork relating to the criminal swindling and defrauding of the state through document forgery”.
The statement says that the discovery of the irregularities resulted from a general tightening of the regulatory regime, comprising the introduction of reforms and other administrative and legal measures, and especially the introduction of the Nominal Ratio of Workers, the Migration Management System and the Mozambique Social Security Information System.
