The North American band Kool And The Gang has been in Maputo since yesterday and will perform tomorrow when Maputo celebrates 129 years of its elevation to the category of city.
The concert will take place on the Eduardo Mondlane University campus as part of the BDQ “Moments of Jazz” program, which has already brought several names famous in world jazz to Mozambique.
At a press conference a few hours after their arrival at Maputo International Airport yesterday morning, Kool And The Gang promised that they were ready for a performance that would recap the group’s entire history.
“We’re going to retrace our story at this concert and bring back songs that were hits in the 70s, 80s and 90s, like ‘Celebration’, ‘Get Down on It’ and ‘Let’s Go Dancin’,” said one of the band members.
Belmiro Quive, of BDQ Concerts, explained that the concert will last five hours and may yet undergo minor changes.
Starting at 5:00 p.m., the show will be opened by the Kakana Band, which will perform for 30 minutes, followed by Rockfeller, missing from the stage for more than ten years now, which will have the same playing time.
The organizers predicted that the concert headliners will appear on stage at 7:00 p.m., and will play for 90 minutes or a little longer depending on audience response.
“The place chosen for the concert was the only one able to accommodate more people, and we are already creating security and logistical conditions for the show to happen the best way possible and in time,” Quive said.
At the press conference, Kakana Band’s Yolanda Chicane said it was a great honour to share the stage with the American band that she grew up listening to, while Rockfeller lead singer Xavier Machiane said it was a privilege to return to the stage after 10 years for a big concert like this one.
“We are back, and not just as a music band, but also with many social responsibility projects that will extend our range of action,” said Xavier, adding that his band was already recording enough songs for one or two albums.
Still to come, information provided yesterday indicates that the traditional open musical concert that celebrates Maputo City Day will take place as usual in Independence Square, outside Maputo City hall, with several Mozambican musicians participating.
