Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday invited the Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, to draw up strategies for cooperating with the Kenyan parliament, in order to bring the two countries and peoples ever closer together.
Kenyatta, who is on a state visit to Mozambique, met with the chairperson of the Assembly, Veronica Macamo, who told reporters after their discussions that parliamentary cooperation should deepen the social, economic and political relations between the two countries.
“We cooperate at government level, but there is also space for us to expand cooperation to our parliaments”, said Kenyatta.
The Kenyan president believed it was possible to reach an “effective peace” in Mozambique, even with the diversity of opinions that exists between Mozambican political parties. “I am pleased that I have received information about how the peace process in Mozambique is advancing”, he said, referring to the negotiations between the Mozambican government and the rebel movement Renamo.
“The great question we have is the role this house (the Assembly) should play in backing up the efforts between our countries”, said Macamo.
Also on Friday morning, Kenyatta laid a wreath at Maputo’s Monument to the Mozambican Heroes, the last resting ground of the founder and first President of Frelimo, Eduardo Mondlane, Mozambique’s first President, Samora Machel, and others who fell in defence of Mozambique’s independence and sovereignty.
