Karpowership held a solidarity action in Chipangara neighborhood, in Beira. The company offered vouchers worth 700,000 Meticais to needy families who, in March, were hit by Cyclone Idai.
Beira, May 20, 2019 – 400 families from Chipangara neighbourhood, in Beira, received shopping vouchers offered by Karpowership, for a total of 700,000 meticais. This solidarity action benefited a total of 2,500 people living in that neighbourhood, one of the most deprived and most affected by the Cyclone Idai, which devastated the central region of Mozambique in March.
The action was formalised at UniZambeze University through the delivery of food baskets and shopping vouchers to ten families with the greatest difficulties, the first to receive this help from Karpowership. The initiative benefited needy families with children who can use the shopping vouchers to purchase food and other items in a commercial space, located on the outskirts of that neighbourhood.
Karpowership was also one of the first companies to react to the tragedy, sending food and essential goods to the victims at the time, when on March 14 the Cyclone struck that region causing thousands of victims and large material damages . The company contributes of food and other basic necessities was integrated in the humanitarian aid ship that departed a few days after the Cyclone, in partnership with the Unidos por Beira civil society platform and INGC.
Now, in a second phase, the company went to the Chipangara neighbourhood to deliver shopping vouchers, in an initiative that included hundreds of families who are still recovering from the tragedy, helping to minimize the impact of the damage, considering that many families lost all their possessions.
Cumhur Aksoy, Karpowership Mozambique Country Manager, believes that “the human tragedy in Beira was devastating”, and is therefore “important to assist and accompany the victims of the Cyclone and not to forget the communities affected.” “With these shopping vouchers we offer the most needy families some comfort, reinforcing our support with the local communities,” said.
This is yet another Karpowership initiative in social responsibility and support activities that it has developed for Mozambique. The company has been carrying out a series of actions in support of education, sports, health and the company also supported last year’s flood victims in the northern region of the country.
Karpowership provides power to the city of Nacala and the northern region of the country, while strengthening the power grid throughout that area.
