Just in: State television shows video where group reportedly claims the beheading of 10 people in northern Mozambique

Mozambican television (TVM-Televisão de Moçambique) has shown a video showing an armed group with covered faces who, according to the channel, claim to be responsible for the beheading of 10 people in the north of the country, and delivering a message quoting Allah.

A source from TVM Information Office told Lusa that the video was obtained from the authorities investigating the case.

The 30-second message, accompanied by the caption “alleged terrorist group”, was broadcast on Wednesday night in the news report, Telejornal, one of the channel’s main daily news broadcasts.

The spokesman of the group, who appears to be a man, refers to Mocímboa da Praia, a village whih was under siege in October 2017, referring to it as the “iniciativa”[which literally means ‘initiative’ but could mean the ‘initiation’, the ‘beginning’ in this context], and saying: “This way, we started little by little.”

“We believe that Allah will support us,” he adds, speaking not always comprehensible Portuguese, and also quoting “Allah” in another language.

“Allah is going to give us support. We do not need anyone’s support, because we are capable,” he resumes in Portuguese. “Allah will always be looking at us.”

The video, apparently shot with a mobile device, shows the spokesman outdoors, during the day wears the same casual clothes as another four members, each wielding a firearm, apparently machine guns, all profiled for the recording.

Lusa asked the Police of the Republic of Mozambique for further information about the video, but has not yet received a response.

The village of Mocímboa da Praia and rural villages in the province of Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique have been targeted by armed groups since October 2017, causing an undetermined number of deaths and the displacement of local residents.

Ten people were beheaded on Sunday after being seized in two remote villages with no electricity or infrastructure.

A study released last week in Maputo points to the existence of illegal trade networks in the region and the movement of radical Islamist groups from countries north as among the roots of the violence.

A number of investments centring on the exploitation both offshore and onshore of natural gas over the next five to six years are under way in the province, involving some of the world’s largest oil companies.

Televisão de Moçambique exibe vídeo de grupo a reivindicar decapitação de 10 pessoas

A Televisão de Moçambique (TVM) exibiu um vídeo com um grupo armado e de cara tapada que, segundo o canal, reivindica a decapitação de 10 pessoas no norte do país, numa mensagem em que cita Alá.

Fonte da direção de informação da TVM, contactada pela Lusa, indicou que o vídeo foi obtido junto das autoridades que investigam o caso.

A mensagem, com duração de 30 segundos, acompanhada pela legenda “alegado grupo terrorista”, foi emitida na noite de quarta-feira no Telejornal, um dos principais noticiários diários do canal.

O porta-voz do grupo, que aparenta ser um homem, faz referência a Mocímboa da Praia, vila sitiada em outubro de 2017, apontando-a como a “iniciativa” e dizendo: “começámos assim aos poucos”.

“Acreditamos que Alá nos vai apoiar”, acrescenta, na mensagem em Português, mas nem sempre compreensível, citando depois palavras “de Alá”, noutra língua.

“Alá vai-nos dar apoio. Não precisamos de apoio de ninguém, porque nós somos capazes”, retoma depois, novamente em Português.

“Como começámos assim, confiamos nele. Alá sempre nos estará a olhar”, acrescentou.

No vídeo que parece filmado por um dispositivo móvel de uso pessoal, durante o dia e ao ar livre, junto a arvoredo, o porta-voz veste roupa casual (colete, polo e calças), à semelhança dos restantes quatro membros, cada qual empunhando a sua arma de fogo, semelhantes a metralhadoras, todos perfilados para a gravação.

A Lusa questionou a Polícia da República de Moçambique (PRM) sobre eventuais informações adicionais acerca do vídeo, mas ainda não obteve resposta.

A vila de Mocímboa da Praia e aldeias do meio rural da província de Cabo Delgado, no norte de Moçambique, têm sido alvo de ataques de grupos armados desde outubro de 2017, causando um número indeterminado de mortes e deslocados.

Dez pessoas foram decapitadas no domingo, depois de terem sido intercetadas em duas aldeias remotas, sem eletricidade, nem infraestruturas.

Um estudo divulgado na última semana, em Maputo, aponta a existência de redes de comércio ilegal na região e a movimentação de grupos radicais islâmicos, oriundos de países a norte, como algumas das raízes da violência.

Diversos investimentos estão a avançar na província para exploração de gás natural dentro de cinco a seis anos, no mar e em terra, com o envolvimento de algumas das grandes petrolíferas mundiais.
