Seven inmates were seriously injured this morning during a riot at the Nampula Regional Penitentiary. They were all evacuated to the Nampula Provincial Hospital, which will confirm in due course whether there have been any casualties.
Prison management says the turmoil started when one of the prison guards on routine rounds at about 5:00 a.m. dropped a tear gas grenade. It was then that “the confusion began”.
Prisoners got loose and set fire to offices where documents related to their cases were stored, breaking windows and vandalising the prison kitchen and health centre.
The situation was brought under control with the intervention of several police and fire brigade units.
There were no escapes.
The Nampula Regional Penitentiary currently houses more than 1,700 inmates.
