Portuguese authorities today (Friday, 02-08) resumed the search for the man who disappeared late Thursday afternoon while practising stand-up paddle-boarding on the Arade River in Portimão, Algarve.
The 29-year-old Mozambican man disappeared late Thursday afternoon, and authorities resumed the search this Friday morning with the support of divers and a drone.
The search operations are being carried out at sea by personnel from the Ferragudo Lifeguard Station and the Portimão Fire Department, and by land by members of the gals Portimão Maritime Police and firefighters, supported by a drone, Portugal’s National Maritime Authority said in a statement.
The man, a Mozambican aged 29, allegedly got into difficulties while paddle boarding in the dredged area of the Arade River, south of the fishing dock.
The Maritime Police Psychology Office is providing support to the victim’s companion.
“According to what was possible to ascertain, the man disappeared in the river after getting into difficulties while returning from a stand-up paddle boarding activity. His friend who was with him and was wearing a life jacket managed to return to land on his own and raised the alarm,” the note reads.
The friend raised the alarm, and authorities began the search using a jet ski and a zebra boat from the Institute for Aid to Shipwrecked People (ISN) involving two officers from the Maritime Police, with two vehicles and four officers and a boat from the Portimão Fire Department with six officers, two of them divers.
