After Major General Mariano Nyonga Chissingue challenged Renamo on Wednesday to publicly present General Jossefo de Sousa, the party responded on Thursday afternoon, bringing the general in question to its base in Inhaminga, Sofala province, where journalists were able to question him.
The so-called deserters, in the rhetoric of Renamo, claimed that General Jossefo de Sousa had been killed by express order of party leader Ossufo Momade, who has not come before the public to present his version of the facts since the accusations began.
Only party spokesman José Manteigas has put himself in the line of fire, always denying the charges and reiterating that the general in question was alive and well.
Promoted two weeks ago to the rank of Major General, Josefo de Sousa denied any deprivation of liberty and said that he was in good health and “fulfilling the mission given me by Commander Ossufo Momade”.
He described his transfer from Gorongosa mountain range to Inhaminga as “normal.”
With the presentation of Jossefo, Renamo now has just three other Renamo officials, who the so-called deserters say were also killed by Ossufo Momade, to present.
Jossefo de Sousa himself assured journalists that the other commanders named as having been murdered were on other Renamo bases, specifically Manica and Zambézia.
