The Ponta do Ouro border did not open this Tuesday morning (14-02) by a demonstration serving to prevent vehicles from South Africa entering Mozambique, Domingo Online reports.
According to Domingo Online, the demonstration is led by Mozambican transporters, in retaliation for the torching of vehicles with Mozambican number plates in South Africa’s Kwazulu-Natal province.
The Miramar reporting team on the scene says that the dozens of passenger carriers on the Mozambique-Durban route are demanding that South Africans and vehicles with South African number plates be prevented from entering Mozambique, as a way of putting pressure on the authorities to resolve the crisis.
Violence on the Durban road is forcing carriers to use more expensive alternative routes. They explain that the Eswatini route to Durban adds an extra 123 kilometres and additional border crossings, filling passport pages with stamps and requiring costly and time-consuming renewals.
According to Miramar, close to ten vehicles with Mozambican number plates, including passenger carriers, have been the target of attacks on the Durban route.
The Police of the Republic of Mozambique have reinforced their contingent at the Ponta do Ouro border post.
