The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, today issued a message expressing pain, grief and dismay at the death yesterday of Simão Ncucha, one of the great precursors of Mozambican nationalist conscience.
Here is the text.
Dear compatriots
It was with a deep feeling of pain, grief and dismay that yesterday, May 21, 2020, we received the sad news of the physical disappearance of our compatriot Simão Ncucha, one of the precursors of Mozambican nationalist consciousness.
Since the early days of his youth, Simão Ncucha had always expressed nonconformity for the colonial presence in our mother land, affirming that the destiny of Mozambique should be in the hands of Mozambicans.
Among several actions in search of freedom carried out by veteran Simão Ncucha, the fact stands out that, in 1960, before the Massacre of Mueda, in the company of Modesta Neva, Lázima Ndalamo, Simone Sambumba, Mariana Ntumiwetu, Cosme Tetekou and Fundi, he went to the headquarters of the Administrative Post of Mueda, to speak with the Chief of the Post, with the aim of demanding the independence of Mozambique.
This act of courage, bravery and determination charged with nationalism, was interpreted as an affront to the order and status quo established by the colonial and fascist regime, culminating in his immediate arrest in Mueda.
And because the colonial authorities thought that Mueda’s prison was not safe, the Seven youths were sent to Porto Amélia, today Pemba, where they remained for months.
Later, that is, after the Mueda Massacre, which took place on June 16, 1960, the seven brave youths were transferred to the prison on the island of Ibo. Subsequently, they were transferred to the maximum security prison in Machava, in Lourenço Marques, now Maputo.
And because the colonial authorities considered that there was a need to aggravate the punishment of those Seven precursors of nationalism, they were transferred to the then prison located on the Island of Xefina.
After April 25, 1974, and then with National Independence, compatriot Simão Ncucha was able to again breathe the air of freedom, with a sense of mission accomplished.
On this dark day, instead of mourning the death of one of the best children of this land , we hereby invite the family and all Mozambicans to celebrate the achievements of this man who in life wrote his history of our country with golden letters.
For this reason, we hope that the soul of veteran Simão Ncucha may rest in peace, reiterating that we will preserve and give the best follow-up to the causes for which he always fought.

To the bereaved family, we address our most heartfelt condolences.
