The large-scale operation, called Stop Money Laundering, resulted on Tuesday (20-08) in the arrest of 17 people, most of them of Pakistani nationality, and the seizure of 608 vehicles, including light and heavy vehicles, in the city of Maputo.
The action, a joint effort by the Mozambican authorities to combat money laundering, took less than 24 hours.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office of the City of Maputo reported that, by court order, it was ordered to suspend the exercise of commercial activities in 24 auto sales establishments in the capital.
These ‘parques automóveis’ for the most part sold luxury cars. The investigation covered a total of 30 auto sales, where strong suspicions of the creation of companies with income of unknown origin were detected.
The detainees are being investigated for improper use of the national financial system, possibly to conceal the illicit origin of monetary values, in addition to alleged tax fraud and smuggling of goods.
The seized assets include, in addition to the vehicles, various documents, electronic sports equipment and more than 600,000 meticais in cash.
