Mozambique’s president, Filipe Nyusi, is to make state visits to Ghana from 26 to 28 March and to Equatorial Guinea from 30 March to 1 April, the country’s parliament announced today.
The spokesman for parliament’s standing committee, Hélder Injonjo, said at a news conference that the assembly had on Tuesday authorised the visit to both countries, at the request of the office of the president, as the constitution foresees.
“The visits to Ghana and Equatorial Guinea are part of the strengthening of bilateral relations,” Injonjo added.
With Ghana, Mozambique shares membership of the Commonwealth, an organisation that was formed with former British colonies. Although Mozambique was not a British colony, it decided to join the organisation because of its strong ties with neighbouring countries that were colonised by Britain.
With Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique has in common the status of member of the Community of Portuguese-Language Countries (CPLP).
Besides authorising the president’s planned visits to both countries, the standing committee had met to set the dates for the first ordinary session of parliament since last October’s general election. The session is take place from 25 March to 29 May, with the debate and vote on the government’s Five-Year Programme, its Economic and Social Plan and the State Budget on the agenda.
Injonjo said that the three documents are part of a set of 20 that will dominate the first session of the new parliament.
