The number of officially registered cases of infection with the new coronavirus in Mozambique has risen from 10 to 17, the Ministry of Health announced today.
“Currently, in our country, we have 17 positive cases, nine of which are local and eight imported,” said the national director of Public Health, Rosa Marlene, speaking during a press briefing at the Ministry of Health, in Maputo.
Of the new cases, one is imported and has been recorded in Maputo, while the other six are locally transmitted, [detected] following an investigation into the ramifications of a case of infection with the new coronavirus discovered in Afungi, Cabo Delgado, in the project area for gas exploitation in northern Mozambique led by French oil major Total.
The director-general of the National Institute of Health of Mozambique, Ilesh Jani, said he had identified 66 people who had contact with Afungi’s first case, of which 64 were from the individual’s professional environment.
“All mapped contacts are quarantined, of which 35 are at the camp in Afungi and 17 are outside the camp, namely in Maputo, Nampula and Pemba, and 14 others are outside the country, in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the United States,” said Ilesh Jani, adding that, for people who are outside the country, Mozambique notified the World Health Organisation.
The country lives in a state of emergency throughout the month of April, with spaces for entertainment and leisure closed, ban of all types of events, gatherings of more than 20 people and limitations on the transport capacity.
During the same period, schools are closed and the issuance of visas to enter the country is suspended.
The new coronavirus, responsible for the covid-19 pandemic, has already infected more than 1.4 million people worldwide, of whom more than 82,000 died.
Of the cases of infection, about 260,000 are considered cured.
The number of deaths caused by covid-19 in Africa has exceeded 500 in the last hours, in a universe of more than 10,500 cases registered in 52 countries, according to the most recent update of the pandemic data in that continent.
