Mozambique today (December 23) reported three more deaths from the Covid-19 respiratory disease. This brings the total number of Covid-19 deaths in Mozambique to 153.
Two women – aged 58 and 65 – and a man – aged 64 -died on Tuesday, while hospitalised inn the city of Maputo, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Health to update data on the pandemic. All three were Mozambican citizens.
The Ministry of Health today reported a further 189 new cases of infection by the new coronavirus.
Maputo city recorded most of the newly diagnosed cases reported today cases: 130. This corresponds to 68.8% of the total of new cases reported today across the country. It is followed by Niassa province with 28, corresponding to 14.8%.
The newly diagnosed coronavirus cases reported today bring to 17,956 the cumulative number of Covid-19 infection registered in the country. Of this number, 17,643 are local transmissions and 313 imported.
In the last 24 hours, the country performed 1588 tests.
Over the same period of time, a further 126 people recovered in full from Covid-19, the Ministry of Health reports The total number of recoveries has now reached 15,982 – which is 89% of all those diagnosed with the coronavirus in Mozambique.
There are now 1,817 active cases of Covid-19 in Mozambique. The city of Maputo has 1,351 active cases, the largest number.
Mozambique has cumulatively tested 261,727 suspected cases of infection since the first case was announced on 22 March.
The Covid-19 pandemic caused at least 1,718,209 deaths resulting from more than 77.9 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.
In Africa, there are 60,254 confirmed deaths in more than 2.5 million people infected in 55 countries, according to the latest statistics on the continent’s pandemic.
The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
