Mozambique today (December 21) reported the death of another patient infected by the new coronavirus, bringing the number of deaths to 149. This is a 46-year-old Mozambican who died today after a period of hospitalisation in the city of Maputo, said Benigna Matsinhe, deputy director of public health, in updating data on the pandemic at the Ministry of Health, in Maputo.
The country today also reported a further 127 Covid-19 confirmed cases.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Mozambique has accounted for 17,695 cases, of which 17,382 are locally transmitted and 313 are imported.
The country has a total of 15,733 (88%) recoveries.
Of the 1,809 active cases in the country, Maputo city has the highest number of infections, with 1,320, followed by Maputo province, with 142,.
Mozambique has cumulatively tested 258,914 people suspected of infection, since the first case was announced on March 22, of which 1,266 in the past 24 hours.
The Covid-19 pandemic caused at least 1,685,785 deaths resulting from more than 76.2 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
In Africa, there are 59,099 confirmed deaths in almost 2.5 million people infected in 55 countries, according to the latest statistics on the continent’s pandemic.
Among Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola has 387 deaths and 16,644 cases, followed by Mozambique (149 deaths and 17,695 cases), Cape Verde (111 deaths and 11,579 cases), Equatorial Guinea (85 deaths and 5,231 cases), Guinea-Bissau (44 deaths and 2,446 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (17 deaths and 1,009 cases).
The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
