Mozambique today recorded the fourth death from Covid-19 and 29 new cases have been confirmed in the last 24 hours, bringing the total from 609 to 638, the Ministry of Health announced.
The victim is a six-year-old child who was admitted to the Central Hospital of Nampula, in northern Mozambique, on May 21, with symptoms of heart failure, said the director of Public Health, Rosa Marlene, in the update of data on the pandemic at the Ministry of Health in Maputo.
“The [child’s] sample for Covid-19 testing was collected on May 26 and the result reported on May 30. After treatment and clinical evaluation, the child was discharged from hospital on June 2, with a recommendation for medical follow-up. The death occurred today, at the child’s home ,” declared Rosa Marlene.
In addition to the new death, which raises the total to four deaths from the new coronavirus, in the last 24 hours the country registered 29 more positive cases of Covid-19, increasing the total infected by the new coronavirus from 609 to 638.

Of the new 29 cases, 18 are male and 11 female. Those infected are all in isolation and are Mozambican nationals.
Three of the 29 newly diagnosed patients are under 14 years f age. The new cases reported today were registered in the Maputo province (05), Maputo city (04 ). Nampula province (14), Niassa province (01), Cabo Delgado province (02) and Tete province (03),
“They are in isolation at home and the mapping of the contact network of these people is currently underway,” she added.
The Ministry of Health also indicated that 160 people are recovered.
Of all the cases so far registered in Mozambique, 576 are locally transmitted and 62 are imported.
The highest number of active cases in the country are currently in Nampula province (202), Cabo Delgado province (105) and Maputo city ( 65). The remaining active cases are distributed across the country.
Since the announcement of the first case in Mozambique, on March 22, 20,263 tests have been performed and about 18,000 people out of more than one million screened have been quarantined.
Health authorities say that they continue to monitor a total of 2,259 people .
Rosa Marlene also informed of the existence of 191 Mozambicans stranded in several countries, including Portugal, who expressed their intention to return to Mozambique, but are unable to do so, and the Government is making efforts to repatriate them.
In Africa, there are 6,769 confirmed deaths in almost 252,000 infected in 54 countries, according to the most recent statistics on the pandemic in that continent.
Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Equatorial Guinea leads in number of infections and deaths (1,664 cases and 32 deaths), followed by Guinea-Bissau (1,492 cases and 15 deaths), Cape Verde (782 cases and seven deaths), São Tomé and Príncipe (659 cases and 12 deaths), Mozambique (638 cases and four deaths) and Angola (142 infected and six deaths).
Brazil is the Portuguese-speaking country most affected by the pandemic and one of the hardest hit in the world, registering the second highest number of infected people and deaths (more than 888 thousand and 43,959, respectively) after the United States.
The Covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 436,000 lives and infected more than eight million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
