The Mozambican Association of Judges (AMJ) today announced a one-month general strike from August 9th, due to the Government’s lack of response to the class’s demands.
“As the concerns raised by the judges in their list of demands were not satisfied and there was no sign from the government authorities to resolve the matter, the general assembly of the AMJ, by majority vote, decided to declare a general strike, on a national scale” , reads a statement from the association.
“The AMJ general assembly will meet again this week to define the details of the process, in particular, the implementation of what will be the minimum services to be provided by judges during the strike”, the note states.
The decision was taken by that body in a meeting held on the 6th of this month.
The AMJ says that the main objective of the meeting was to assess the state of play of the process of claiming the rights of judges that formally began in May, with the sending of the claim book to the competent authorities.
Mozambican judges complain about an alleged “depreciation of their status” and flaws in the application of the New Salary Table (TSU), which has been the target of strong opposition from other professional classes, such as doctors and teachers, who have even called strikes in protest against salary delays and cuts.
Approved in 2022 to eliminate asymmetries and keep the State’s wage bill under control, its launch caused salaries to soar by around 36%, out of an expenditure of 11.6 billion meticais/month (169 million euros/month) to 15.8 billion meticais/month (231 million euros/month).
