The Judicial Court of Gaza, in southern Mozambique, today sentenced six police officers to prison terms of between three and 24 years for their involvement in the killing, last October, of election observer Anastácio Matavel.
The ruling handed down by Judge Ana Liquidão sentenced Tudelo Guirrugo, Edson Silica and Alfredo Macuácua to 24 years in prison, Euclídio Mapulasse to 23 years, and Januário Rungo and Justino Muchanga to three years each.
The ruling orders that defendants Guirrugo, Silica, Macuacua and Mapulasse jointly pay a compensation to Anastácio Matavel’s heirs, in the total amount of 1.500.000 meticais [around US$21,474 at current exchange rates], CDD Moçambique reports.
The seventh defendant, Ricardo Manganhe, the only civilian in the case, was acquitted.
