A large fire destroyed last night the Municipal Market 1º de Maio, in the centre of the city of Tete. No one was injured and authorities say they still do not know the real causes of the fire.
Several photos and videos have been posted on social media.
The fire broke out around 9 pm and the stalls were completely destroyed, leaving .400 vendors, who operated in the Municipal Market 1º de Maio, in the centre of Tete city, with most of their products consumed by the flames.
The fire fighters (SENSAP) came to the scene and, as is often the case, faced difficulties in extinguishing the fire.
Meanwhile, the owners of the stalls say that they tried to extinguish the flames using buckets of water, but were unable to quell them due to the intensity of the fire.
The Secretary of State for Tete Province, the Provincial Governor and the City Mayor , have all visited the scene of the accident.
Mayor César de Carvalho expressed regret at what had happened and promised that the structure would be rehabilitated.
Firefighters were still struggling to fully extinguish the blaze when O País’ reporting team left, around midnight.
