The Maputo City Judicial Court this Thursday sentenced former Minister of Labour Helena Taipo to 16 years in prison.
Judge Evandra Uamusse convicted eight of the 11 defendant, who now have 20 days to appeal.
Two defendants were acquitted.
The sentencing was as follows:
Convicted:
1. Mária Helena Taipo – 16 years in prison;
2. Sheng Zang – 12 years in prison;
3. Dalila Zubaida Lalgi – 12 years in prison;
4. Alfredo Lucas – 12 years in prison;
5. Baltazar Teófilo Mungoi – 12 years in prison;
6. Hermenegildo Nataniel – 12 years in prison;
7. Pedro Taimo – 16 years in prison;
8. José António Monjane – 16 years in prison;
9. Anastácia Samuel Zita – 16 years in prison.
Each of the above were also sentenced to pay the maximum justice tax.
Acquitted:
1. Issufo Francisco;
2. Sidónio dos Anjos.
