A devastating fire of great proportions is currently hitting the Central Market of Quelimane, causing significant damage and leading to the displacement of several local traders.
The fire broke out in the early hours of this Tuesday morning, quickly consuming the iconic trade hub, considered the main economic center of the city.
So far, no fatalities have been reported due to the fire, but some people suffered minor injuries during the evacuation of the site.
An investigation to determine the causes of the fire has already begun, and the authorities promise to investigate all the details to clarify what happened.
Quelimane’s Central Market is a symbol of the city’s economic identity and a meeting point for residents and visitors in search of a variety of products. With its partial destruction, a concerted effort will be needed to recover and revitalize this important infrastructure.
The fire generated a dense cloud of dark smoke that hangs over the city, which raises the concern of the authorities about possible risks to the health of the population.
One of the most alarming concerns is the proximity of the fire to the Quelimane Fire Fighters, the Public Salvation Corps [SENSAP], located just 150 metres from the Central Market.
At the time of writing the fire brigade has not yet managed to quell the fire.
