The headquarters village of Morrumbala, in Zambézia province, on Monday suffered an earthquake registered at 4.4 on the Richter scale by the US Seismological Information Centre.
Diário da Zambézia broke the news after confirmation by the National Meteorological Institute (INAM), which may issue a statement in the next few hours.
According to a senior source at INAM, the earthquake, which struck at 3:45 a.m. today (Monday), is considered to be of small magnitude, and material damage is probably minor.
Morrumbala experiences frequent seismic shocks as a result of its proximity to Malawi.
