Figures so far put forward by the Mozambican authorities indicate that 11 kidnappings have occurred in the country (including this latest, on Friday) since the beginning of the year, with the victims always businessmen or their close family members.
In October, a group of businesspeople in the city of Beira, Sofala province, central Mozambique, stopped activities for three days in protest against the wave of abductions in the country.
The Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA), the largest employers’ association in the country, has also on several occasions demanded a more effective fight against this type of crime, and even Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi has called for tougher measures.
In November, the Mozambican government promised an “energetic fight” against kidnappings, describing the crime as “horrendous”, and saying that it was strengthening the police and modernising the corporation’s ability to combat kidnappings.
