A businessman kidnapped last Thursday in Maputo was released on Monday by the police, who arrested three men suspected of involvement in the case, a spokesman for the corporation told Lusa today.
“The victim is with his family and apparently in good health, after being rescued by the police,” said the spokesman for the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) in Maputo province, Henrique Mendes.
Mendes added that the businessman was being held in a house located in Boane district, Maputo province.
Three men were arrested in possession of a firearm and of the vehicle allegedly used to transport the victim.
“We are working to find out whether these individuals are involved in other criminal activities,” said Henrique Mendes.

Earlier this month, Mozambican police arrested two South African citizens on suspicion of involvement in an attempted kidnapping of a Mozambican businessman.
The Mozambican prime minister, Adriano Maleiane, said in parliament in May that the agents who will work in the unit that will fight kidnappings that affect the country’s main cities have already been selected.
“The first phase, already completed”, of the creation of the unit to combat kidnapping, “consisted of the selection of agents” and the next stage will be the specialization of the personnel and will have the support of cooperation partners, he continued.
At the time, Maleiane said that since 2021, 28 cases of kidnapping have been registered in Mozambique, of which “15 have been fully clarified”.
