Six dead and thirteen missing is the preliminary estimate of a sinking this morning on the Zambezi River in Luabo district, Zambezia province.
The vessel was heading for Marromeu district with 19 persons . No survivors have been found so far.
The Chinde district administrator confirmed that the tragedy occurred around 8:00 a.m..
“As you know, there is no ferry crossing the Zambezi River, so the only option is the boat called ‘Baco-baço’, which is the one that sank,” the administrator said, adding that attempts to clarify the matter were ongoing.
“We have the information that, after the vessel departed, it hit a log floating in the Zambezi, breaching the hull and allowing water to enter. The boat sank, leaving many victims and people missing,” he explained.
