Mozambique recorded, in the last 24 hours, 50 new infections by the new coronavirus, bringing the total to 2,079, announced the Ministry of Health.
Of the cases announced today, “49 individuals are of Mozambican nationality and one is of Indian nationality,” reads a statement from the Ministry of Health.
Most of the new cases reported today (August 5)are in the city of Maputo (39), followed by Maputo province (06), Gaza (02), Zambézia (02) and Nampula (01).
“Three cases are of children under five,” adds the statement.
All new patients are in isolation at home and their contacts are being identified, according to health authorities.
Of the total of 2,079 cases already registered in Mozambique, 1,901 are locally transmitted and 178 are imported, while 10 people are hospitalised and another 778 are reported to have been recovered.
Of the active cases in the country, the City of Maputo and the Province of Maputo, in the south of the country, are those that register the largest number, with 372 and 258 cases, respectively.
The provinces of Cabo Delgado and Nampula, in the north of the country, continue with 253 and 201 active cases, respectively, with the remaining seven provinces having less than 60 cases.
The country, which has lived in the last four months in a state of emergency, has tested 63,725 suspected cases since the announcement of the first case of Covid-19 (on March 22) and screened more than 1.6 million people.
A total of 26,182 people suspected of being infected were placed under home quarantine and 3,473 continue to be monitored by health authorities.
The Covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 701,000 lives and infected more than 18.5 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
