The three foreign journalists and a Mozambican who were detained by the army in the district of Palma, northern Mozambique, have been freed after 48 hours of detention, one of them said.
“After 48 hours of detention, we were freed. The fight continues,” Estácio Valoi, the Mozambican journalist who was part of the group detained, wrote on his Facebook page.
The journalists were detained at around 09:00 am on Monday by the Defense Forces of Mozambique (FADM) as they made way to Palma from Chitolo, Mocímboa da Praia, where they had been working.
They said they had permission from local and provincial commanders to work in those areas, according to a statement from the Southern African Social Media Institute (MISA).
The journalists were detained at the Palma District Command.
The districts of Palma and Mocímboa da Praia in the province of Cabo Delgado, like other areas of northern Mozambique, have been under attack from armed groups since October last year.
Violence has already killed dozens of civilians, members of the Defense and Security Forces and armed groups. Population displacements as well as destruction of property have also been widespread.
The groups involved in the attacks have been linked to attempts to impose a different version of Islam from what has been practiced in the region, which will see natural gas production projects in the coming years.
