Mozambique: Finance Minister discusses suspension of aid with US Ambassador - AIM report
The Japanese government has provided 23,630 US dollars for the construction of dams in Messenguese, Namuera, Tariane, and Catange, in the district of Marrupa, in the northern Mozambican province of Niassa. The dams will increase the availability of irrigated land for local farmers.
According to a press release from the Japanese embassy, the four dams are scheduled to be inaugurated on Wednesday at a ceremony in Catange. The project was implemented by the Mundukide Foundation which is a non-governmental organisation.
The aim of the project is to prolong the growing season by more than four months. This will enable farmers to supply the local and provincial market with larger amounts of cabbage, lettuce, tomato, onion, and other vegetables. The embassy expects that the project will directly benefit about two hundred farming families.
The inauguration ceremony will be attended by the provincial director for agriculture and food security Jose Varrimelo; the provincial director of public works Americo Chivale; Japanese attaché Yasuma Takao; and Benat Olaizola from the Mundukide Foundation.
